Mark Steinberg
District 10 Commander - Navy

Mark "Coach/Steiny” Steinberg, is the son of a WWII Army Veteran. Mark enlisted in the Navy and entered boot camp in San Diego on March 5, 1968, 20 days before his 20th birthday.  He attended A School in Norfolk, VA, as a Communication Yeoman (CYN). His first duty station was Communication Station Guam, where he specialized in off-line Crypto. After serving in Guam for 18 months, he received orders for staff duty, Commander Naval Force Vietnam (COMNAVFORV), where he worked in the Comm Center for Vice Adm‘s Zumwalt and King.

After service, Mark returned to college and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He went to work as a Tax Auditor for the California State Board of Equalization. He retired in 2007 as a Supervising Tax Auditor, with 32 years of service.

Mark spent 25 years volunteering as a coach for youth football and Little League baseball.  In addition he volunteered another seven years as a coach for Special Olympics softball.


Mark joined the VFW while on a trip to Conroe, TX, eight years ago.  He transferred his membership to Post 1525, Clayton Valley, after meeting the Commander during a Buddy Poppy event. He served as Quartermaster to Post 1525 for 3 years, before becoming it’s Commander. He served as Trustee and Senior Vice Commander for District 10 before being elected as District Commander in 2020.

Mark is married to Helen Steinberg, District 10 Auxiliary President. Both are dedicated in service to our veterans.
