| Description |
| Provided chaplain support and follow-up for a Post member and Vietnam veteran who recently returned home following surgery for a hip displacement. Because he was experiencing limited mobility and was unable to speak with me directly at the time I spoke with his wife who is currently serving as his primary caregiver during his recovery.
I offered reassurance and support to his wife while recognizing the additional responsibilities she has assumed as his caregiver. I also provided information regarding home caregiver support services and veteran resources that may assist both of them during his rehabilitation and help reduce some of the burden of caring for him at home.
Additionally I discussed how a sudden loss of mobility and independence can involve feelings of grief and adjustment. I provided general information about the stages of grief and explained that he may experience emotions such as frustration anger sadness or difficulty accepting his temporary physical limitations as he adjusts to this change.
I reassured his wife that these reactions can be part of the adjustment process and encouraged patience communication and continued support while he recovers. As Post Chaplain I will continue checking on both the member and his wife provide spiritual and emotional support as appropriate and help connect them with additional veteran or caregiver resources should further needs arise.
