James Wright was reelected as State Chaplain for the Department of California on 25 June, 2021 during the virtual Department Convention which took place online due to COVID-19 restrictions. He attended seminary at Southern California Seminary, and he is also a trained pastoral counselor who has units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). He has served as a Chaplain at the VA Hospital in La Jolla in San Diego County and at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CA.
He served 20 years in US Navy. He earned his eligibility for the VFW in the Gulf War, earning the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was the Junior Vice Cmdr. of VFW Post 5179, and when the Sr. Vice died he assumed that position. Sadly the Post Chaplain died soon after that, and he was elected as his replacement. He was the Post Chaplain for 10 years before he went through the last chair and became commander of VFW Post 4630 which had combined with VFW Post 5179 years earlier. He is also the District Chaplain for District 1. He has been a VFW Life Member since 2002
