December 18, 2009 - The following is a letter received by District 1 Cmdr. Larry Brown in response to the "Countdown To Heroes" Program.
Dear Lawrence,
You don't know me. But I know you.
You’re the kind of American who supports our troops—and for that, I'm so thankful.
You see, I'm deployed to Kuwait right now. While I'm here, I am missing out on the milestones of my three small children, Rahim, Xavier and Kitara.
When I left, I was terrified that the distance would create a terrible void. I knew what I had to do to serve my country and I've never doubted that, but I also knew that my kids were too young to see the logic behind my sacrifices.
When VFW gave me free phone time, I was truly touched. I felt a sense of peace in knowing that someone out there appreciated what I was doing and cared enough to extend a hand. You brought a little piece of home to me.
I wanted you to know that your gift to the VFW goes a long way. Your generosity has made a real difference not only in my life, but in the lives of my trusted comrades. When we needed you, you were there. For that, we salute you!
Have a safe and happy holiday season!
Sincerely, Jeaniel Image, Petty Officer 2nd Class
